With the strong tourism potential in the province, property giant Megaworld Corporation plans to build a 7.5 ha commercial town center in its upcoming Bacolod project.

Megaworld’s Northill Town Center will be part of its 53 ha Northill Gateway township in Negros Occidental, and feature dining, retail, leisure and tourism amenities.

It says the horizontal commercial development will mainly comprise stand-alone two-storey structures of retail shops and dining establishments, surrounded by landscaped parks and open spaces.

“The town center, which will be accessible along the Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road, will also have a central plaza, an events venue, ‘pasalubong’ centers featuring Negrense delicacies, a supermarket, and wellness and sports facilities,” says the developer.

“The Northill Town Center will certainly become a destination not just for tourists and visitors to the province, but also for Negrenses who want to unwind and relax,” says Megaworld Lifestyle Malls senior VP Kevin Tan.

About a third of the commercial development will be devoted to green and open spaces and feature a central plaza with special water elements.

“An iconic chapel will also be built to serve as a major landmark for the township,” says Megaworld, with construction of the center to start early next year and completion slated for early 2018.

Northill Gateway is a joint development of Megaworld and its wholly owned subsidiary Suntrust Properties in partnership with the Lacson family. It is also building an upscale 15 ha residential village within the township, to be called Forbes Hill. Meanwhile, Suntrust is building Fountain Grove, another themed residential community inside the Bacolod township.

The SM Group is bidding to bring international furniture brand IKEA to the Philippines.

SM Investments Corp. vice chairperson Tessie Sy-Coson said the country’s largest mall developer and retailer is among those trying to sign a deal with the furniture retailer.

“We are just one of those who are talking to them,” Sy-Coson said in interview on the sidelines of the National Retailers Conference and Stores Asia Expo 2016.

“Everybody’s interested.  It’s a very good furniture retailer so let’s see,” she added.

IKEA is one of the world’s biggest franchisers and furniture retailers with 387 stores in 48 countries.

Reports abroad have indicated the company is inclined to set up a shop in the Philippines.

According to Sy-Coson, IKEA is looking to enter the Philippine market under a different model.

“They have a lot of criteria which are different from other retailers. It is not yet finalized what they want. Maybe they will come to making final decisions in 2017,” she said.

The SM Group hopes to add IKEA to its growing international brands that already include Forever21, Crate & Barrel, Uniqlo, Ace Hardware, Alfamart and Watsons, among others.

The group, through listed SM Prime Holdings, is also the country’s largest mall developer with 58 shopping centers across the Philippines to date.
